Use AI to support a practice—not to outsource judgment.
A sensible personal implementation begins with one reversible task: summarizing material you can check, drafting from your own notes, sorting a private collection, or generating options before you choose.
Start local when the task is bounded
A device-based tool can be a good fit for simple capture, classification, transcription, or assistance where the supported device performs adequately. “On device” only describes part of the path: inspect sync, analytics, backups, permissions, and model downloads before treating a task as private.
Use cloud services consciously
Cloud tools can offer stronger capabilities and current shared information. Before pasting material, read the service’s data controls, use the least sensitive example needed, and assume generated output needs review—especially for health, legal, financial, or consequential personal decisions.
A 30-minute setup
- Name one task and one success measure, such as “produce a first summary I can verify in ten minutes.”
- Classify the input: public, personal, sensitive, or someone else’s confidential information. Do not use unapproved data.
- Choose a local, cloud, or hybrid tool based on that task—not a general promise.
- Keep the original material and mark AI output as a draft until you check it.
- After five uses, record time saved, correction rate, privacy surprises, and whether you would keep the workflow.
Avoid these failure modes
- Giving a tool access to a whole mailbox, drive, or health history for a task that needs one document.
- Treating confident language as evidence or a citation as proof that a source exists.
- Letting a tool send messages, spend money, or make commitments without a deliberate review step.
