The Imagined Life: Living Inside a Dreaming Brain, by Mayone Maha Rajan

About the book

Every night the sleeping brain builds experiences from within. By day, imagination lets us rehearse a conversation, anticipate a danger or picture a future that does not yet exist. The Imagined Life explores that traffic between the actual and the possible.

The book begins with sleep and dreaming, considers why dreams are difficult to study, and examines the uncertain comparison between dreaming brains and generative machines. It then turns to deliberate imaginative practice and the choices through which a possible future can become a lived one.

Its practical argument gives imagination a demanding role: to inform attention, rehearsal and action. It also examines how fantasy, anxiety and an abundance of generated possibilities can divert us from the work of living.

The reading contract

Research findings are separated from interpretation and exploratory comparisons. Narrative similarity does not establish that machines dream or share the brain’s mechanisms.
