The Borrowed Light: The Physics of a Self Made With Others, by Mayone Maha Rajan

About the book

A self is shaped through encounters: recognition and conflict, attachment and separation, the habits inherited from others and the boundaries through which a life becomes one’s own. The Borrowed Light explores that relational construction.

Its chapters connect scenes of human life with ideas drawn from physics. The scientific concepts serve as disciplined analogies for thinking about connection, limits and the structures we build together; they do not supply a physical proof of a psychological claim.

The result is an inquiry into what we borrow, what we mistake for an independent possession, and what it might mean to acknowledge our sources while taking responsibility for the life that follows.

Who it’s for

For readers drawn to relationship, identity and reflective philosophy, especially those interested in what a scientific analogy can illuminate—and what it cannot establish.

Inside the book

  • Identity, recognition and relationship
  • Rival certainties and shared worlds
  • Boundaries, attachment and what crosses them
  • The physical concepts behind the analogies
  • Provenance and the limits of the argument

The reading contract

Physics is used as a source of explicitly bounded analogies. The book does not claim that M-theory proves an account of identity or relationships.
